Our Process

Our clients approached us with a dark and dated, french country-inspired kitchen. The original layout had the appliances scattered around the perimeter, and a central island that was modified to accommodate bar-height seating. This eat-in kitchen had plenty of space, but was in need of a few upgrades to optimize its functionality and give it some personality.

Cabinetry:

Our team began the remodel by ripping out the original cabinets and countertops. The original kitchen cabinets didn’t reach to the ceiling- sacrificing storage space and creating a dust trap at the top of the cupboards. In addition, the kitchen’s black countertops darkened the space, leaving it feeling drab. Our team designed, assembled and installed a new set of ceiling-height cabinets painted in Sherwin Williams’ Dill that offer ample storage space and hide away the kitchen’s appliances. By designing the cabinetry with backlit display units at the top, our clients are able to exhibit dishes and store their wine without sacrificing storage or counter space.

Next, a new, sloped hood and custom island were installed in a contrasting natural wood. The hood’s brass strapping compliments the honey bronze knobs and pulls throughout the kitchen. Calcutta Gold Quartz countertops paired with a textured, white backsplash balance the cabinets’ vibrant green hue and natural wood accents. Ceiling-mounted, brushed brass bistro shelves replaced the small, vertical cupboards on either side of the hood. The open shelving offers a vintage look to the traditional farmhouse silhouettes and pop against the hood’s natural wood grain.

Appliances:

The original kitchen layout had the appliances installed around the perimeter of the kitchen. The new kitchen design’s panel-ready refrigerator and dishwasher are disguised behind the green, inset shaker doors. The refrigerator is now installed in the oven’s previous location. Now, our clients have a vintage inspired oven and cook range underneath the sloped range hood. The sink and dishwasher to the left of the range, and the refrigerator to the right creates a triangular work zone. Our clients chose to place their drawer-style microwave underneath the island for convenience and safety.

Central Island:

The original island design had been modified to accommodate seating. The new central island is large enough to serve as a prep space and offers seating for two. The island’s light, natural wood finish balances the green cabinets. The turned legs allow for more leg room, and lend a traditional touch to this kitchen’s mash-up of colors, textures and styles.

Electrical:

This renovation involved moving the kitchen’s lighting and electrical to accommodate the new layout and chandeliers. Our clients chose under-mount outlets and switches- leaving the new backsplash undisturbed. In the case of the island’s side-mounted outlets, our team sourced matching gold plates that coordinated with the drawers’ pulls and knobs. It might be a small detail, but keeps the kitchen’s design consistent.

Design

When it comes to remodeling, why not have a home that reflects your taste? From paint shades, to lighting and accessories, there are more options than ever before- and in every price point- to create a look that is completely unique to you. Our clients took a traditional farmhouse kitchen design- think apron front sink, shaker-style doors, and natural wood accents- and gave it a whimsical twist by combining vibrant colors, textures, and modern accents to create a bright and eclectic modern farmhouse kitchen. Below, we’re going to give you a few tips on how you can recreate this look in your own home. Still not sure about bright colors? Check out this modern farmhouse kitchen with neutral colors and bold finishes.

  1. Don’t Be Afraid of Color and Pattern:

When it comes to creating a bright and eclectic farmhouse kitchen, color and patterns play a vital role. Start by selecting a color scheme that resonates with your personality and complements the farmhouse aesthetic. Our clients chose a medium green in Sherwin Williams’ Dill for their cabinets, but you may consider another vibrant hue such as sunny yellow or a bold blue  for your cabinetry, walls, or backsplash. Then, you’ll want to introduce patterns through wallpaper, tile designs, or textiles like curtains and chair cushions. Our clients chose a pink, patterned wallpaper for their back wall, and incorporated pink accents through their art and upholstery. Or take this Minimalist Shaker Kitchen Design that chose a blue and white wallpaper as a visual transition from their all-white kitchen to their solid blue living room walls. Mixing patterns can be a playful and exciting way to add depth and visual interest to your kitchen as long as they are balanced with smaller patterns or a solid coordinating color.

  1. Mix and Match Materials:

When it comes to materials, a bright and eclectic farmhouse kitchen welcomes a mix of textures and finishes. For cabinetry, a combination of painted and natural wood finishes creates a dynamic and eclectic look. Our clients chose to pair their medium green cabinets with a lighter finish on their island and range hood. However, if you are more drawn to crisp whites or pastels, darker wood accents would contrast well with the lighter shades.

As for countertops- opt for practical, durable surfaces that offer visual interest, like quartz, granite, or butcher block. Consider adding a pop of color or pattern to your countertops through decorative tiles or a vibrant backsplash, or leave it plain like our clients. They chose a 6x6” white tile that reflects light and brightens the space, while also offering subtle texture.

  2. Incorporate Statement Lighting:

For a bright and eclectic look, choose fixtures that complement the whimsical style of your kitchen. Our clients opted to mix styles by pairing the island’s round, gold-leaf pendant with a minimalistic linear chandelier over the dining table. You could also look for unique or vintage-inspired light fixtures with vibrant shades, unconventional shapes, or intricate details. Choosing fixtures with similar finishes will ensure they create a cohesive look despite their varying styles.

  3. Top Off with Unique Finishes and Accessories:

To truly embrace an eclectic design aesthetic in your farmhouse kitchen, pay attention to the finishing touches. Our clients chose to incorporate open shelving as a functional and visually appealing accent on either side of their range hood. The brushed brass finish pops against the natural wood, and the french bistro style contrasts well with the traditional farmhouse silhouettes. Open shelving allows you to display colorful dishes, vintage kitchenware, or even plants and herbs. Don't be afraid to mix and match different styles of dishes or add quirky decor items for a personalized touch.

As for accessories, choose textiles like dish towels, curtains, and chair cushions with vibrant colors and coordinating patterns. Look for patterns that complement your color scheme and add a playful touch to the overall design. Our clients chose to carry the pinks in the wallpaper through to the artwork and dining area’s upholstery. Further incorporating natural elements such as potted plants, fresh flowers, or woven baskets will infuse warmth and texture into your space.
